The education community has lost one of its greatest innovators. Grant Wiggins, educator, author and innovator, has died.
Wiggins, an ASCD Faculty member and president of Authentic Education, is perhaps best known for co-authoring, along with Jay McTighe, Understanding by Design, and Schooling by Design. These works had a major impact on many educators and administrators in their approaches to curriculum and instruction.
“With the passing of Grant Wiggins, the field of education has lost a most influential advocate and innovator,” said Judy Seitz, ASCD executive director, in a posted statement. “As a key presence in national and international reform efforts, notably including widespread assessment reform initiatives, Grant has left a legacy that will continue to benefit generations of educators and students.”
The announcement of his death came via Twitter: “Grant Wiggins, of brilliant mind and dearest heart, died yesterday. The world has lost a true champion of learning. Carry on the work. – Denise”
Our sympathies go out to Grant’s family and colleagues.
